Testing non-formal educational tools in real-world settings is an essential step in empowering young people to navigate today’s digital environments. As part of the HATE-LESS project, supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program, project partner EESTI PEOPLE TO PEOPLE (EPTP) hosted a pilot training workshop with young participants in Tallinn, Estonia.
Held on May 6–7 at Tallinna Tõnismäe Reaalkool, the workshop sessions brought together 30 young people to explore the core modules of the HATE-LESS Toolkit, reflect on online experiences, and develop creative concepts for youth-led media.
Putting the HATE-LESS Toolkit into Action
The workshop provided a structured space for participants to engage directly with the six core modules of the HATE-LESS Training Toolkit.
During the session:
- Project Overview & Module Introduction: NGO President Ruta Pels introduced the Erasmus+ Programme, outlined the objectives of the HATE-LESS project, and walked participants through the toolkit’s six educational modules.
- Reflecting on Digital Experiences: Youngsters took time to reflect on the world of social media, sharing personal cases, observations, and lived experiences navigating digital platforms.
- Participatory Video Concept Work: Guided by youth worker Igor Kalakauskas, participants split into interactive work groups to discuss and develop potential topics for upcoming participatory video projects.
Empowering Youth Through Participatory Media
By combining media literacy reflection with hands-on group work, the pilot training allowed young people to move from passive consumers of digital content to active storytellers. The workshop demonstrated how non-formal learning frameworks can help young people critically analyze digital narratives, foster empathy, and construct positive counter-narratives in their communities.
