Amplifying Youth Voices: Introducing the HATE-LESS Methodological Guidelines

In today’s fast-paced, digitally interconnected world, young people face complex challenges as hate speech, racism, and disinformation find fertile ground both online and offline. At the same time, young people are also agile digital users with immense potential to become critical thinkers and active agents of change.

We are thrilled to introduce The Methodological Guidelines for Participatory Actions from the HATE-LESS project, officially titled: Harnessing Awareness to End Hate Speech and Disinformation for a More Diverse Youth using Media Literacy and Technology.

These guidelines are a comprehensive, practical resource designed to empower youth workers and educators with the strategies and tools needed to navigate these critical issues through the lens of media literacy and participatory practice.

What is the HATE-LESS Approach?

The core premise of this work is that media literacy is not just a technical skill set – it’s a fundamental form of critical empowerment. By adopting innovative methods like storyboarding, autoethnography, and soundscape creation, the guidelines aim to:

  • Combat hate speech and disinformation by promoting inclusive, youth-led approaches to storytelling and civic engagement.
  • Strengthen social and civic competencies by promoting fundamental values and combating discrimination.
  • Facilitate Participatory Action Research (PAR), putting young people at the center as co-creators of knowledge and change.

These chapters move from defining participatory approaches (Chapter 1) to actively creating counter-narratives through participatory videos (Chapter 5), all while anchoring the work in ethical, inclusive practices (Chapter 3).

Ready to transform your practice and empower the next generation of storytellers and change-makers?

Dive into the HATE-LESS Methodological Guidelines to explore practical, creative, and forward-thinking methods for building a more resilient and inclusive future.
