The HATE-LESS Project

The project aspires to dismantle hate speech, disinformation, and entrenched racist narratives by amplifying and making
visible diverse counter-narratives.

Project Description

Digital technologies and social media shape daily life, but they also amplify hate speech and disinformation. In Europe, distorted narratives around migration increasingly fuel racism and target vulnerable communities.

The European Parliament has recognised the weaponisation of disinformation against minorities and called for stronger safeguards against hate speech and radicalisation.

HATE-LESS addresses these challenges by strengthening media literacy and critical thinking among youth workers and young people. The project promotes diverse counter-narratives, highlights young people’s testimonies, and encourages the responsible use of digital tools.

Through participatory learning methods and video production, young people share their stories, promote diversity, and foster intercultural dialogue. The partnership develops practical training materials to ensure that non-formal education can effectively reach and empower young people, especially those with fewer opportunities.

Addressing Priorities

Priority 1:

HATE-LESS connects policy, research, and practice by addressing hate speech, disinformation, and racism in line with European inclusion objectives.

Through focus groups, methodological guidelines, and pilot schemes, research findings are translated into practical tools for youth workers and young people. Advocacy activities ensure that results inform policy discussions and decision-making.

Priority 2:

The project strengthens the quality and recognition of youth work by building media literacy and critical thinking skills.

Innovative methods, including participatory video production, enhance engagement and creativity. Dissemination activities highlight the role of youth work in addressing social challenges.

Priority 3:

HATE-LESS fosters inclusive learning environments that:

  • Strengthen youth workers’ capacities
  • Amplify young people’s voices
  • Encourage stakeholder responsibility

By promoting the responsible use of digital tools, the project supports diversity, inclusion, and intercultural dialogue.

Objectives

Our objectives are:

  • To combat hate speech and disinformation through media literacy awareness to tackle the spread of fake news and promote alternative narratives about migrations
  • To improve the provision of media and digital literacy into youth work and non-formal education by training youth workers and young people to acquire critical thinking skills that will allow them to deconstruct narratives that promote hate speech, disinformation, fake news and racism
  • To mobilise youth workers and youth organisations/bodies, as well as youngsters to strive for more inclusive and diverse societies through their continuous engagement with participatory methodologies, approaches, and new technologies.
  • To strengthen social and civic competences through fostering knowledge, understanding and ownership of fundamental values; promoting mutual respect and intercultural dialogue; and combating discrimination on all grounds.
